ExxonMobil Aviation recently won the UK Energy Institute’s top award for a
groundbreaking initiative designed to reduce the number of incidents involving
collisions of airport refueling vehicles.
Through a novel partnership with Smith System, a company specializing in
behavioral road safety training, ExxonMobil Aviation has achieved a 50%
reduction in the number of incidents involving its 1,200 airplane refueling
vehicles that are based at 250 airports around the world.
The UK Energy Institute, whose purpose is to promote the safe, environmentally
responsible and efficient supply and use of energy in all forms and
applications, awarded to ExxonMobil its Safety Award for “the most impressive
new step towards enhancing the energy industry’s safety record.”
To date, the program has involved over 1,200 ExxonMobil refueling personnel
worldwide in on-road and classroom training. It also included the creation of
standards for use of equipment, inspections, and signaling when operating
large vehicles in reverse. This helps to ensure that your aircraft is less
likely to experience a vehicle incident at those FBOs that use the Smith
System method.
Commenting on the Energy Institute’s award, Charlie Downie, ExxonMobil
Aviation Operations Manager, said, “We have always placed the highest
importance on operating safely and the industry thankfully has very few
incidents. Nevertheless, given the potential for airside collisions at
today’s busy airports, we were determined to further improve our good
performance. To receive the Safety Award from the prestigious Energy
Institute is great recognition for all the hard work put in by Smith System
and our personnel.”
