The Operations Integrity Management System

The Operations Integrity Management System is a structured framework used to manage safety, health and environmental risks.  Introduced by the company in 1992 it is now a well-established system producing significant results.

Common Operating Standards

All ExxonMobil Aviation's operations meet the strict requirements of our own operating standards.  These are defined in comprehensive manuals and are implemented around the globe.  Our standards meet or surpass all industry standards and in many cases the ExxonMobil Aviation standard has been the basis for those adopted by the industry.

Introduction of New Safety Technology

ExxonMobil Aviation makes careful evaluations of new safety related technology.  Where benefits are established the new equipment is introduced into our operations. Examples of this include:
  • Closed circuit sampling systems that are easier to use, prevent spillage and produce more representative samples.
  • The intermittent deadman used to prevent the deadman being wedged closed.  ExxonMobil Aviation has equipped it's trucks with the intermittent deadman.  This is now rapidly becoming an industry standard.

Comprehensive Inspection Programs

Comprehensive inspection programs ensure all ExxonMobil Aviation's aviation operations maintain the highest operating standards.

ExxonMobil Aviation's team of highly qualified international inspectors visit every ExxonMobil Aviation operated location on a regular cycle to carry out detailed inspections of the operations.  In-country Aviation Operations Managers also carry out national inspections of each facility on an annual basis.  ExxonMobil Aviation also participates in industry inspections of jointly operated facilities.

Loss Prevention Schemes (LPS) and Behavioral Based Studies (BBS)

Loss Prevention Schemes are used to prevent or reduce losses using behavior-based tools and proven management techniques.  Operators use these tools as part of their daily routines.

Behavioral based studies require regular observation of individuals carrying out their normal activities.  Feedback is given on their performance and areas for improvement.

Analysis of Incidents Sharing of Experiences and Lessons Learned

Thorough incident investigation is a cornerstone of ExxonMobil Aviation's safety processes.  All personnel incidents worse than first aid, each spill greater than 4 liters and all aircraft and motor vehicle incidents are reported to ExxonMobil Aviation's Safety Advisor.  Detailed records are maintained to track trends and monitor performance.

All incidents are thoroughly investigated and the findings are communicated across the operations group.  Incident investigations will recommend steps to minimize future risks and best practices are shared amongst all operations.

In addition to learning from experience within ExxonMobil Aviation, Safety Advisors work with colleagues from other parts of the ExxonMobil Corporation.  A shared computer network and database for storing and sharing safety related issues means ExxonMobil Aviation can learn from the experiences of other segments of the business.

ExxonMobil Aviation personnel are also members of various industry bodies and specification setting committees where safety related issues are discussed.  Our close relationship with our suppliers enables us to be appraised of cutting edge products as and when they become available.

Comprehensive Training of all Employees and Refresher Training

Competent operating personnel are essential for maintaining excellent performance in ExxonMobil Aviation's operations.  Maintaining operations that protect safety, health, and the environment and that comply with laws and regulations requires the careful selection, placement, ongoing assessment and training of employees.  ExxonMobil Aviation systems ensure the recruitment and training processes provide the skilled operators required to maintain excellent performance.

Safety Award Schemes

All ExxonMobil Aviation operations personnel participate in the safety awards scheme designed to motivate the operating teams and recognize top performance.  Wings Awards are given annually to airports that excel in safety performance.  Recognition is based on safety results, safety preparedness and near miss reporting.  Each year the award criteria are made more stringent to ensure standards are continually raised.  Facilities that gain the Wings Award three years running are given the prestigious International Wings Award.
